This morning the Board of Directors of the Sergeant Bluff-Luton Community School District accepted the resignation of Bill McKelvey as middle school principal, effective immediately. An interim middle school principal, Dr. LuAnn Haase, has been retained for the remainder of the 2023-24 school year. More information will be shared about Dr. Haase with our middle school families.
The District is aware that there are some social media and other communications out in the community regarding this matter. While the District would like to share all the facts regarding this matter, and clear up any misinformation that may be circulating, it is barred by law from discussing confidential personnel and/or student matters. What the District can disclose to the community is that in all personnel and student matters, District policy, procedures and Iowa law are followed under the appropriate guidance from legal counsel and other outside personnel, as necessary. This matter was no exception. The Board would like to express its continued trust and confidence in Superintendent, Chad Janzen, and convey its appreciation for the efforts of all District personnel as they work to transition leadership in the middle school. The Board is confident that this will continue to be a successful and rewarding year for the students and staff of Sergeant Bluff-Luton.

Joe Beckman spoke to students, by building, in grades 3-12 today. He brings a positive message to students. He shared 5 themes with them:
1. Love YOU
2. Push Through
3. Just Look Up!
4. Fail On
5. Yeah Toast
I encourage you to talk to your children about what they remember from today.
One of my favorites is Just Look Up! He talks about the power of human connection. Disconnect from our devices and connect with each other.

Recently, I was interviewed by KTIV regarding the Community Engagement Team’s presentation to the school board on August 30. The news story they ran as a result of this interview misrepresented the district. After a conversation and review of the interview, KTIV has updated the story online.
The district has been committed to listening to the community over the last year. With community presentation on August 30, the board will now engage in short and long-term planning regarding district facilities.
The updated story can be found here:

Thank you to all who were able to attend the presentation last night. A special thank you to the Community Engagement Team for their time and energy. The presentation will be posted on the district website.

People have asked if the community presentation will be streamed or recorded. It will not be streamed, but it will be recorded. SiteLogIQ will take the recording and overlay the Power Point presentation so you can watch the slides and listen to the recording. The tours the community team went on in the school buildings will also be posted online. This all takes time so please be patient. We are trying to be as transparent as we can. Hope to see a good crowd Wednesday!

There are a lot of creative bulletin boards up at the elementary. I remember reading The Boxcar Children books (bottom right).

On August 30, the Community Engagement Team will present to the school board the community’s opinion on what they recommend the district should do regarding facilities. I’ve heard the question, “We’ve heard this before, why should I attend?” The answer is you have not heard this before. This is something different. This presentation is NOT a presentation by the board or administration to the community, but rather a presentation by the community to the board. I’ve been told by others that this process looks and feels different than what’s been done before. Please plan to attend on August 30 in the high school auditorium at 6:30 p.m.
