Spirit Spot

SBL Community Schools is embracing innovation with a new pilot program that will allow customers to use debit and credit cards at concession stands and the SBL Spirit Spot, the student-run coffee shop.

Through a partnership with Clover, a leading point-of-sale system, the district will launch the program this spring. Fans attending track meets will be among the first to benefit from the added convenience, along with student patrons of the Spirit Spot.

“This is an exciting step forward for our district,” said Superintendent Chad Janzen. “By offering card payments, we’re improving the customer experience while also giving students hands-on experience in business operations.”

Looking ahead, SBL is expanding its focus on student entrepreneurship. Beginning in the 2025-2026 school year, a new business class called Warrior Enterprises will take over management of the business side of district concessions. Students in the course will gain real-world experience in financial management, marketing, inventory management, purchasing, and billing, further strengthening SBL’s commitment to career-ready learning.

“This initiative not only modernizes our concession operations but also creates valuable learning opportunities for students,” said Business Teacher Ashley Hansen. “Warrior Enterprises will empower students to apply business principles in a meaningful way, from tracking inventory to managing revenue and expenses.”

The district has received numerous inquiries regarding the ability to make electronic purchases for concessions. The district will assess feedback from the pilot before implementing the system districtwide. Fees associated with electronic purchasing will result in increased prices.
